UWC

University of Western Cape is an inclusive university with a warm student body. In this photo, we were led by a couple tour guides marked in gold honorary scarfs. These students were in their final year and inducted as leaders in their campus community. There are students from all over Europe and including myself (in the back and middle) from the USA.

Capetown

Capetown, South Africa is an extraordinary place. It’s not the only city in the world that is surrounded by beaches, however, with how well the number of options of beaches are integrated with the city, the number of activities make it a unique place to be.

StellenBosch

StellenBosch is known for its wineries and day tours. It is a two hour plus drive and more from Capetown depending on where one is going. I completed my first international half marathon with a few other international students. They have restaurants and even a university that attracts international students as well. It is worth a day trip, if one can go.

Apartheid and Tourist Attractions

South Africa has a deep history in its apartheid movement and how it has aPected social norms for generations. A couple must do events will be touring the District Six museum and going on a free walking tour that is held daily at the City Centre to better understand the history.

Cops and legal system

Capetown has a checkered reputation for the prioritization for men and women in uniform and the legal system. Bribery and corruption aPect their police force and legal system. It takes ePorts of accountability to address matters, but it can be done. I was harshly reprimanded for driving and having a seen cell phone on my person. Their local law is that even if one is driving and using a cell phone for GPS it cannot be held on the person.

Internationals have been known to either pay and comply for not wanting to bother or advocate or in other cases bring up misconduct with private investigation in the police department or receive a response from the mayoral oPice (as was in my case) to hold men and women in uniform accountable for misconduct.

Student life and Young adults

This was a core experience of mine, since as a distance doctoral student of Missouri University of Science & Technology (MS&T), I have not benefited from a live lab. Due to the nature of my Civil Engineering thesis it was appropriate for me to be housed in the graduate lab in the Computer Science department. I had a break through in my research and was able to assist in the broad academic experience at UWC. This was priceless. In addition, I had an opportunity to learn from peers the everyday life of an academic aspirations beyond the lab. This broadened my horizon as my lab was filled with pan Africans that were experts in a broad range of experiences.

Christians and Sentiments of the people

South Africa is filled with many devout Christians and they are passionate people. I had the privilege of joining a “home cell”, which was a pivotal part of my experience to balance my academic experience along with living in a town house with other study abroad European students.

History of UWC with Missouri Hub

Learning that the Henry Mitchell scholarship was spawned by the historic divestment initiative has made me even more grateful to be a scholar.
